The great news is that Wanda Jackson still is going strong. Her current tour lasts into September.
The Queen of Rockabilly often performed with Elvis (here is a nice candid shot of the two). Her reemergence was engineered by Jack White. He produced her wonderfully titled album, The Party Ain’t Over, which was released early last year. Here he backs her on Shakin’ All Over on Letterman. Other clips include Sparklin‘ Brown Eyes, Rock Your Baby, Fujiyama Mama and Rockabilly Fever.
The last song was written by Carl Perkins, and suggests the pride they have in the music — along with a touch of sour grapes:
Lord, it came rollin’ out of Memphis
Like a hurricane or Texas tornado
Yeah, It came rollin’ out of Memphis
Like a hurricane or a Texas tornado (Yeah, it did…)
And they called it rockabilly
Long before they called it rock ‘n’ rollWe took a little country music
Put some pop in and dressed it up in soul
We took a little country music
Put some pop in and dressed it up in soul (That’s all we did…)
And we called it rockabilly
Long before they called it rock ‘n’ roll
Hopefully, Jackson will go on forever.
One side note that doesn’t fit anywhere else in that post: I can’t get over the double neck guitar that guy is using in the embedded clip above.
Below is Sparklin’ Brown Eyes.
