The popular saxophonist Kenny G — Kenneth Bruce Gorelick (bet you didn’t know that) — was born on this day in 1956.
Like Kevin Bacon, Kenny G. has become a bit of a joke among the too-cool-for-school crowd. In another era, Guy Lombardo was seen the same way by many jazz people. Louis Armstrong — who without trying is one of the truly cool people who ever lived — saw what Lombardo was about. He lauded his rhythm section and was a pallbearer at his funeral. Food for thought. Do something as well as Kenny G. plays sax before making fun of him.
Here is more about the talented G. Above is “Sentimental.”
