Wikipedia’s profile of the Indigo Girls – Amy Ray and Emily Sailiers – says that the two met in elementary school and have performed together since they were high school students in Decatur, GA. They both attended Emory University and started using the Indigo Girls name at that point. The group’s first album was released in 1987.
Both are active outside of the group. Ray has solo albums to her credit and founded a non-profit organization that aids independent artists. Saliers works in the restaurant industry, is an author and performs with her father.
