Trombone players don’t get enough respect. It seems as if it is a terribly difficult instrument to play.
One of the best of them, Locksley Wellington (Slide) Hampton, was born on this day in 1932, according to Wikipedia. The guy has a great name and a great nickname.
Above is a two minute or so excerpt of a Hampton trombone solo at Dizzy Gillespie’s 70th birthday celebration at Wolf Trap in 1996. The song is “Oop Pop a Da.” According to the excerpt of the interview with JJ Johnson — another great trombone player — and the looks on the faces of Diz and the others, it was special.
