Leon Russell was a straight-out genius. He was a gifted songwriter, a member of The Wrecking Crew, the musical director of Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour and simply seemed to be present on most big pop and rock music projects and events for a period in the 1970s. Leon Russell and the Shelter People (click here or on the image for Amazon or here for iTunes) is just a fabulous record. His version of Dylan’s “It’s a Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall” is one of the best covers ever. “Home Sweet Oklahoma” is just great as well.Here is the set list, courtesy of austinpickers, who posted the clip on YouTube.
